DECOUPAGE TECHNIQUE

DECOUPAGE TECHNIQUE

In recent years, it has become fashionable for a decoration technique very simple and inexpensive way to reuse old furniture or to embellish everyday objects such as boxes, plates, vases... It is the decoupage; I'm sure you've heard of this technique and you've seen images like this before:

Decoupage means “to cut out” in French and, in decoration, refers to the technique that consists of decorating an object with different cut-outs of materials (fabrics, magazine paper or even napkins) through successive layers of paint, cut-outs and varnish.

To decorate any piece of furniture or object using this technique, you only need the following materials:

  • Decorative cut-outs (napkins, stickers, wrapping paper...)
  • Scissors
  • Brush and brush
  • Wood sandpaper
  • Acrylic paint
  • Matt varnish

The process to achieve this effect vintage on wood consists of three steps:

  1. Sand the furniture and paint it with acrylic paint. Let it dry and repeat the operation: sand and paint with a second coat of paint.
  2. Apply the varnish in the areas where the cut-out designs will be glued, it is OK if the varnish overhangs the area that will cover the design. Please note that if you use a napkin pattern, you should only take the layer of paper that has the pattern printed on it.
  3. Gluing the cuttings placing them on the varnish to stick it on, taking care not to leave any wrinkles and then applying a coat of varnish over the glued cut-outs. That's it! All that's left to do is let it dry.

Although floral ornaments and antique designs are the most common, you can use whatever patterns, colours and shapes you like to achieve innovative effects. It is ideal for gifts (for example: a jewellery box, a box, a photo frame...) and also to avoid throwing away old furniture.
