HOW TO HANG FURNITURE ON PLASTERBOARD WALLS

A few days ago, a customer asked us how to install suspended (wall-hung) furniture in a plasterboard partition.
We turned to one of our trusted «handyman» customers for an answer, and to write this post, as this is an increasingly common problem.

The first thing to bear in mind is that although plasterboard is currently replacing traditional brick partitions in interiors, we must not forget that it is still a board of cardboard and plaster.
Installation is very simple, but its robustness is reduced to less than half if proper guidelines are not followed.
There is a wide range of plugs and so-called «easy hangers» for hanging pictures or other decorations on plasterboard. Depending on the type of dowel, it can hold between 5 and 30 kilos of weight.
But if we are talking about heavy furniture, which in turn will carry more weight, we will have to take other measures.

Plasterboards are always screwed onto metal profiles (uprights).
These profiles are usually placed every 60 centimetres.
We must locate the uprights with the help of a magnet or a metal detector, for example.
Once located, the best solution is to bolt a solid structure over them to act as a base. The most common is a metal «crossbar» that goes from one upright to another and bolts it to the uprights.

On this crossbeam or similar, we can anchor any type of furniture, whether heavy or light, without the plasterboard suffering the slightest damage.
We are sure there are many, many other alternatives for this situation, but this one seemed quite logical and effective.
We hope this will be of help to you.
